If you want to learn to play the cello – you are in the right place. But, I am sure you have a few questions too. So, to help you learn more about me and my cello lessons, here are the answers to those I am frequently asked.
Private Cello Lessons vs Cello Music School – What’s the Difference?
Although both offer unique benefits, I am a strong believer in private cello lessons – that’s how I learned to play after all, with the very best teacher I could have wished for.
- More flexibility in scheduling – you can arrange a time that fits in with your schedule. And, lessons are available all year round.
- Personalized instruction – a personal tutor can tailor the lessons to your individual learning style.
- Focus on technique – private lessons enable the tutor to focus on developing proper technique.
- Faster progress – students find they progress faster in a one-on-one situation rather than in group lessons.
What Age To Start Cello Lessons?
Generally, I start teaching children from around the age of 7 and beyond. From this age, children have developed the fine motor skills needed to handle and play a cello. And, they are also well on their way to improving their reading and writing abilities at school.
In certain cases where the child is highly motivated and the parent is able to support them at lessons and at home, I have taught cellists as young as age 4.
For Adults – you’re never too old to learn to play the cello. However, ensure you can commit the time for regular practice and lessons.
What Equipment Do You Need for Cello Lessons?
You will need a cello, but you don’t have to buy one. I suggest renting a cello. It’s a great option when you or your child are starting out.
Besides, you should be 5 feet tall and over to be able to handle a full-size cello properly. So, for children, I believe the best option is to rent a smaller version until they are ready. Fortunately, there is a reputable store local to my studio where you can rent a cello until the time is right to purchase your own instrument.

Are There Any Other Cello Essentials I Need for Practice or Performance?
Yes. The full list of essential cello accessories for practice or performance can be found on my Resources page.
What Is the Parent’s Role in Cello Lessons for Kids?
Parents can make the biggest impact on their children’s cello lessons by getting involved. That doesn’t mean always sitting by their side as they play, but you should encourage your child to perform regular daily practice. It is also your responsibility as a parent to ensure your child’s schedule is free to do so.
Do Parents Come Into Their Children’s Cello Lessons?
For the first few lessons, I encourage parents to sit in, as it can make the child feel at ease in a new environment. After this, I let the family decide – some kids prefer their mom or dad in the lesson, whereas others do better on their own.
After each lesson, I talk briefly with parents to make sure the right things are being practiced. It also gives me a chance to communicate progress.
Do You Offer a Free Cello Lesson for New Students?
You are welcome to come along to the studio before lessons commence to see how I teach, and if you have played before, bring your cello along too.
If you are a beginner, I can offer a free interview in person, to familiarize you with my teaching techniques. For those who have played before, you can show me what you can do and what you want to achieve from more lessons.
Your first class will include a notebook, your first etude book, a login to Musico, and your first book of music pieces.

What Styles of Cello Playing Do You Teach?
My cello lessons give you the opportunity to explore music from a different range of eras – from Baroque to more modern music. Whatever genre you prefer, there’s bound to be a piece we can play together, and your skills can be used in many styles, even rock and roll.
Do You Have a Preferred Beginners Program or Cello Lessons Book Series You Use?
I have a list of recommended music that students will need to purchase as they progress. I will let you know which music books your child requires at each stage of their development.
For adults learning cello, it should be something you really love doing. Choosing the right style of music that suits you can help keep you better motivated and engaged.
Do You Teach Music Theory as Part of the Lessons?
Absolutely. Alongside the ability to sight-read music, students also need to understand music theory as well as the capacity to really listen to the music they are playing. This allows the student to not only play the music but to express the emotion of each piece as they perform it.
Tell Me More About Your Cello Teaching Style and Your Thoughts About Teaching Music and Cello Lessons.
I am always looking for new ways to make learning to play the cello fun and want to help more students find their inner passion for music – in particular the cello. Lessons are collaborative as we explore together the cello, music theory, and techniques to find the best way to play each piece.
Like daily practice, listening is extremely important. I believe how a student listens to music can change the way they interpret the piece and develop their playing style. Performance can also be an important part of the cello learning process. I regularly train my students for live performance pieces, either alone or as part of an orchestra.
